May 27, 2012 marks the 45th anniversary since the referendum that saw Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people recognised in the Australian Census. June 3 this year is also the 20th anniversary of the High Court of Australia recognising that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land in the Mabo decision. To celebrate reconciliation week in 2012 I have revisited the beginnings of my reconciliation journey for Engineers Without Borders Australia. It's only the beginning of what will be, unfortunately, a lifetime journey. I say unfortunately because many of the aspirations for reconciliation are unlikely to be achieved in my life time.
